Globalization Project

Using the contents of your home, locate the name of the manufacturer and place of manufacture for the items listed below. On a separate sheet of paper, in columnar form, list each item, the company that manufactured it, and the place it was manufactured. If you own more than one of any of the items listed, provide the information for the example that you purchased most recently. If you do not own a particular item or cannot find all of the information for an item, note that on the table with the phrases "not owned" or "not available."

Once you have completed the table, plot each place of manufacture on the appropriate regional map(s) of the world available at < http://typhoon.sdsu.edu/Facilities/Data/cartography.html > (requires Adobe Acrobat reader) or < http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/atlas/ > (click on the region, choose "basic" and country borders "on," choose "Printable Page-size Formats"). If you know the city of manufacture, plot that as a dot and label it with the city name and the item name. If you only know the country, highlight the country with a highlight pen and label it with the country name and the item name. If multiple items on the list were manufactured in the same place, list all the items made there beside the place name.

On a separate sheet of paper, briefly discuss your results. What was your reaction to what you found? Did it surprise you? Are any patterns evident? What does the nature of where these items were made tell you about the contemporary geography of manufacturing and trade?

Turn in the discussion of your results (no more than one page), your table, and your map(s). Please staple all the sheets together.
