  Feature: Welcome to the GeoForum

As the title says, welcome to the GeoForum. This is the place for students of the Geog 102 - Human Geography class at Allan Hancock College to post their homework articles, comments, and discussion. Sorry, but for now posting is only open to students enrolled in the class. The rest of this article will help explain the basics of creating and posting articles, comments, etc.

The Basics.

The simplest way to add content (ie, post an article) is to click on the "Post article" link in the upper left column of any page in this forum. The fields in the posting page are well labeled and commented, and you can enter text directly into most of the input fields on the posting page. The Summary and Main Body fields accept 3 types of text:

  • Plain text: just like source code, plain email, or usenet. No formatting or fancy fonts, etc.
  • Structured Text: a kind of shorthand for headers, paragraphs, links, and other formatting elements. Simpler than markup languages.
  • Basic HTML: a subset of HTML tags. Legal tags are given at the bottom of the posting form.

If you don't know much about markup languages, HTML tags, etc, then just choose plain text. You just need an overview paragraph for the Summary field, and a few more paragraphs for the Main Body. You don't need to worry about anything but covering the main points in the article, writing coherent sentences, and leaving a blank line between each paragraph. If you don't want to type directly into the web-form, then you can use the editor attached to this article to compose your article (or comment) and save it to a text file on your computer. An example article of this type was posted by me (on oil and gas leasing in the Los Padres).

    The Next Level.

If you want get a lttle fancier, such as headers, lists, bold, etc, then you can use one of the other two options, either structured text or HTML. I still don't know much about the structured text stuff, but I know a little HTML, and only the basic tags are allowed anyway. This article uses some of the basic tags for headers and lists. There are many good HTML tutorials on the web, if you're interested in going the extra mile. I'd prefer to have everyone concentrate on writing and discussing, however, so don't worry about it. But I will try and answer any questions you might have about either the forum, the articles, or even HTML.

    The Articles.

Remember, we're looking for a local connection here. Obviously, articles about local issues - land use, zoning, environmental issues, resource use, population, etc - are great. Don't forget to browse the book chapters, but all of the above topics (and more) should be fair game. Larger (global) issues are fine too, but we're looking for a local impact. If it's just about a something like global warming, and there's no direct local impact on our economy or environment, then I'd rate that article pretty low. Ask yourself if it would really impact you or your neighbor. Or you could ask me...
