from the not-so-cute dept. According to a recent article, Los Angeles county has had an increase in Coyote attacks on it's residents. Experts say that the drought has caused a decrease in the coyotes' natural food sources (rabbits, mice and birds) and has forced them to come into urban areas. Last year there was 8 people injured in 17 attacks. The previous year it was only 3 people. Newly developed homes are encroaching on their habitat which also explains why the coyotes are in urban areas. In December, a 3 year old girl was dragged out of her San Gabriel home and into the streets by a pack of coyotes. Her parents were able to rescue the child and she sustained only minor injuries. "These attacks are normally rare, which makes the recent number of reported attacks extraordinary." states Fish and Game spokesman Steve Martarano. Most attacks are in the month of May when coyotes have their pups and they are in greater need of food. Though the department does not keep track of attacks on pets it was noted that this week a miniature poodle was killed by the coyotes. Efequiel Morales, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Animal CAre & Control states, "They're (coyotes) are coming closer to residences and getting used to people. And as they loose their natural fear of people, they get bolder. They'll east anything they can get their paws on." Fish and Games have started a public awareness campaign that they hope will educate the public for thier protection as well as for the coyotes' protection. All coyotes involved in attacks that are caught are euthanized. Another example of urbanization versus environment is brought to our attention. The rapid growth of human population is taking its toll on the critters around us. You can't blame the coyotes for trying to survive. Their food source is affected by the drought and have to find other ways to feed themselves. I don't feel that the coyotes should be killed even if they do attack a human. I think that they should be released back into the wild. < Novelist spurs passion over parking | Are the Snowy Plovers really Endangered? >
