from the dept. More than a dozen Allan Hancock College students participated in a day-long rally at the state capitol to raise awareness about proposed cuts to the community college system's 2002-2003 budget. The 14 Hancock students joined about 900 other students and staff form many of the 108 California community colleges. Part of the day was also spent meeting with legislators and other officials. The group had seperate meeting with representatives from the offices of Sens. Jack O'Connel and Bruce McPherson, and local Assembly members Abel Maldonado and Hannah-Beth Jackson. "It was a good experiance," Maria Quesada said in a statement. She was one of the Hancock students who made the bus trip on April 30. "It was kind of scary at first, but then we realized we could voice our opinions and let them know how [the budget cuts] would affect students. I think they [the legislators] didn't really know how much the schools would be affected-we kind of got to the root of that matter." Budget cuts that could add up to nearly $l million in losses next year for Allan Hancok College have been proposed by Gov. Gray Davis. The cuts include the near elimination of the CalWORKs welfare-to-work program and deep cuts in programs that assists students in being successful in college and transferring to four-year colleges. The trip was funded by the college's associated student body with dollars set aside by students for advocacy.
